Sending Baked Goods – Choices, Choices

We wrap up a happy week of delivering baked goods and perishables with a few last minute tips in making sure that your confectioneries reach the recipient in top condition.

Easier to Ship

Certain types of baked goods are easier to ship than others. Layer cakes and fragile goods like meringues are not recommended when sending things by post, although with meringues if you absolutely have to send them, sometimes freezing them works better and keeping them packed in cold storage, because this decreases of their chances of breaking in transit.

Moist breads, cookies and fudges and caramels are good for shipping as they are flexible and heavier and are less likely to break or ruin if they are thrown about a bit when being posted. Still place a ‘fragile’ sticker on all baked goods to prevent any cookies or muffins being ground into dust though!

Be Careful of Mixing Flavours

Strong flavours tend to overpower others especially if they are kept in the same space for extended periods of time. If you are thinking of sending gingerbread cookies or cookies with other strong flavours with more mild flavours, try to package them in separate boxes as the milder flavours can be overpowered by the stronger ones.

Tips for Protecting Your eBay Parcel

Christmas time has to be one of the busiest times for RAND and it’s usually due to the large amounts of gifts being sent across the world in time for the big day. In addition, eBay is seeing an incredible amount of people buying and selling their items as people look to find the perfect gift for their loved one. It’s important that you are aware of the basics when it comes to shipping parcels in order to protect the cherished item, so here’s a few tips for all you eBay sellers out there who plan on using RAND Logistics in the near future.

You should always box an item and this really should go without being mentioned. However, you should also fill out the box with protective layering in case the box is thrown about on its way to the addressee, so using bubble wrap to fill out the box is ideal. Try to make sure that the object is fully concealed in the box, however difficult it is to do so. You wouldn’t want to lose parts of the item in the shipping process.

If you’re searching around your home for the perfect box to fit your gift but simply can’t find one, there are a number of packaging techniques and items you can make the most of. From polystyrene and shredded newspaper through to bubble wrap and further empty boxes, there are all sorts of materials you can make the most of. The trick is to keep any spaces in the box covered.

RAND Logistics is a certified eBay courier and we strive to provide the best services for our eBay sellers so you don’t have to be concerned about items going missing in transit. So if you plan on shipping an item to your latest eBay buyer make sure you use the services RAND Logistics has to offer!

eBay Seller Tips

If you have started selling on eBay, you may be wondering how some people manage to keep the costs of postage and packaging so low, especially when sending internationally. One tip is to bulk buy packaging materials, such as padded envelopes, tape and parcel paper, as this will reduce the cost of sending each individual package. Lost parcels can also mean you have to push up your prices overall, as you will lose both the item and the money you have to refund to the buyer, so use a reliable courier service to send parcels to other countries to make sure it gets there. You should also make sure you don’t waste money by sending oversized boxes, as parcel delivery rates are estimated by the size and weight of the package, so keep it compact to keep costs down.

Sending Large Parcels

There is a golden rule that a surprising amount of people don’t realise when it comes to sending parcels: it’s all about striking the balance between the size and the weight. Just because you’re sending a tiny parcel, it doesn’t mean you will be paying next to nothing to send it if it is very heavy, and equally a large box won’t necessarily mean paying a fortune if you’re only sending pillows.

When you’re thinking about how you will package your items, think about the best way to fit them into as small a space as possible. In a way, it is like Tetris – if you can slot things together and utilise all the space in a box effectively, you can keep costs down. The larger the parcel, the more you will pay for the size. For example, if you are posting two new pairs of shoes, by simply doing away with the shoeboxes you can save a lot of space and fit both pairs into the equivalent space of one box.

If you’re sending multiple items, it may well end up costing less to send your items in separate small boxes, as very large boxes will come with a premium postage cost to match as they are difficult to transport and deliver. Lots of small items may require a massive box to send in one package, but by splitting this into more manageable parcels you might be able to reduce your packaging costs.

Also make sure you’re not using a box too big for what you’re actually sending. This can push the cost up even though you’re not using all the space inside, which is a waste of money. Find a box into which the item fits as well as possible to only spend the money necessary to send the parcel.

We offer competitive rates on sending large parcels at RAND, so use our quote finder today to find out how much it will cost you to send your large package abroad.

Packaging Items For Sending Abroad

We’re back with a useful post today about how best to package your items when you’re sending them abroad. It’s not quite as simple as sending something domestically, as there is much more chance of something getting damaged in transit on a long journey to a foreign country. While RAND takes every possible measure to minimise the potential for damage to your items during transit, it will be better for your peace of mind if you know your items are packaged well.

Firstly, regardless of the item you’re sending, we would highly recommend sending your items in a cardboard box. Some people think that soft items which can’t get damaged easily can be wrapped in brown parcel paper, but there are lots of reasons this isn’t ideal. It can get ripped or disintegrate if it becomes wet, and it won’t provide the right level of protection for your item.

Find a box a couple of inches larger than the items you wish to send to allow room for packing materials, and check along all the ‘seams’ to make sure it won’t burst open. Useful packing materials include scrunched up newspaper, polystyrene packing beads and foam shapes, along with our trusty favourite, bubblewrap. Wrap your item in bubblewrap if it is fragile, and place it in the box surrounded with foam or paper to keep it in place and act as a buffer against the sides of the box.

Use a strong parcel tape to secure everything inside, being sure to check all the edges and corners again. Make sure the address is written clearly on the box, either in neat block capitals or in the form of a printed label to make sure our couriers can read it easily! We will then take care of the rest.

For a reliable courier service, you can count on RAND to deliver.
